Romila Thapar, Raghuram Rajan, Noble Laureate Satyarthi, and President Mr. Pranab Mukherjee (3 Times), Vice President Mr. Hamid Ansari, Narayan Murthy, Mazumdar Shaw, Sharukh Khan, Arundhati Roy, Anupam Kher, and almost everyone have a bone to pick with Ms. Tavleen Singh. Or is it the other way round? Unfortunately anyone who is Anti Modi has, as per her, sold out to the growing cult of criticizing Modi and BJP. Or to be fair to her, the writers of India returning their awards are the main culprits.

It seems to be a fashion for high profile thinkers (HPT) to first write a premise then go ahead and prove it. Decide which side they are on and then justify it by giving historical anecdotes. As if the people of this country do not have a mind of their own and waiting for the HPTs to tell them what is happening in the country. One example is the Times Now Newshour on this issue where only history was discussed as to when Congress and when BJP did not speak out against the intolerance in the country. The prime question then why issue of intolerance is being raised now. Similarly one can make out from Tavleen’s column in Indian Express that she considers all who have joined the movement as bunch of frauds fighting for the freedom of speech when not a single publication of these writers have been banned. It seems that the opposition against intolerance and bigotry has been conveniently converted into a fight for saving freedom of expression by all award winners to justify Tavleen’s prediction long time back that the intellectuals of the country would return their awards in case Modi came to Delhi.

Once again, like seasoned politicians, she ridiculed these bunch of frauds as creatures of selective outrage, who never spoke a word about the freedom of expression being guillotined in Iran when Fatemeh Ekhtesari and Mehdi Mousavi were lashed for shaking hands with opposite sex, or the chopping of hands of Mt. Joseph by Jihadists of Kerala’s Popular Front of India and also obviously the ethnic cleansing of Kashmiri Pandits. Now this is really a reasoning which defies logic and taking it to a farcical level let’s say that probably half of these writers were more concerned with India and haven’t read of Iran and Mousavi; some of them might be sick or travelling at the time, some might not have been very sure that giving back the rewards would stop the cleansing of the Kashmiris, some might have waited that if something more serious would happen then they would return the award. The assumption that the awards are being returned only to spite Modi is a flawed assumption. And the fact that an event has happened and an event might happen are two different sets of eventualities and returning one’s award will make a difference only to the latter.

Her argument about Pew Polls is more confusing. She says that if the Award returnees are to be believed then Pew’s 87 percent of approval rating of Modi can be justified by either Pollsters were fascists or the people were wrong. Well  can we say that these 87 percent people are the awardees of the nation: the thinking intelligentsia of this country; is it job of this 87 percent to decide what people should think about freedom of expression, tolerance, bigotry, the political manipulations, the ideological compulsions of today’s India; do these 87 percent people include the entire village in Dadri who went ahead and witnessed an innocent man being badgered to death by soft spoken, innocent and violence hating Hindu bigots? Should the rest of 13 percent people from the Pew report kill their conscience because the 87 percent is a very suffocating majority with license to become violent? Are we not aware how these pollsters work in this world? Well probably there is need for the Award winners to return their awards and let the balance 87 percent know what is at stake and how to protect our tenuous freedom in a harmonious society.

The article further ridicules award returnees as those who were against Modi even before he became PM and they were lurking in five start hotels of Varanasi plotting to see that Modi lost the poll. Well it was not as if Modi was a commoner before he became PM. He was CM of Gujarat which had a history of its own. There could have been thousands of detractors who might have reasons to dislike his handling of situations which involved communities in Gujarat. Opposing Modi was not a political agenda being pursued by the writers on behest of Congress. It could have been political if these so called awardees were plotting in favour of some political party; either Kejriwal or a political nobody from Congress. So it was more against Modi than for anybody else. And it was so because they feared that something of this kind might happen once he becomes PM, when the Hindu religious fringe might take the pole position and the society might splinter.

The sad effort by the article, trying to give a political angle to the entire Award Wapsi is so much in line with the official stock answer of everything political in this country – that political rivals and agendas are behind this conspiracy.

Only thing which we can do just now is to find out the connection between the Congress and its nexus with Moody, Moody’s Italian Chief might be close to Sonia Gandhi’s Family. May be the present President might get a new term if Congress comes to power after Modi, may be Narayan Murthy might get a big contract from the next Congress Government. All have spoken against the growing intolerance in India. We can see skeletons everywhere if we want to. We need to definitely grow up and give credence to events without giving them colors to make them a farce.
